What are your goals with digital marketing?  Obviously, you want to drive sales of your product or service, but what does that really mean?  In other words, HOW do you really sell online?  What does it require?  In this article, I’ll reveal the most important goals in a digital marketing campaign, and how to accomplish all 4 with a single tactic.

The 1 Tactic That Achieves 4 of Your Digital Marketing Goals

The 4 Ways Digital Marketing Drives Sales

The first thing that comes to mind when you think about digital marketing driving sales is probably ranking #1 in Google.  If you could get your website to rank #1 when prospects search for you, then the sales would come flooding in, right?  That’s called search engine optimization, or SEO.

If you read my last article about the website mistakes that could be costing you sales, then you know you also need a system to collect contact information and follow up with leads via email.  That’s called a lead generation system, and it’s the 2nd way digital marketing can drive sales in your business.

Next, it’s important to think about online shopping behavior.  Before making a buying decision, prospects need to feel confident that you (or your business) are an expert in your industry.  It doesn’t matter if you’re selling clothes, jewelry, or professional services.  If your prospect doesn’t see that you’re among the best in the industry, then she’s probably going to keep shopping online.  It’s just much easier and safer to click to another website, versus risk buying an inferior product or service.  This is why expert positioning is so important in digital marketing.

Finally, the 4th way digital marketing drives sales is via engagement.  If you can gain the attention on sites like Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and Pinterest, then there’s no cheaper option for continually nurturing, educating, and promoting sales and referrals.

The One & Only Way to Accomplish All 4 Goals

Now that you know the 4 goals of your digital marketing, I have some good and some bad news.

The good news is you can hit all 4 of the digital marketing goals using just one marketing tactic.  This one marketing tactic will give you the raw material to rank #1 in Google, to create a lead generation system, to position you as an expert, and to engage with your prospects and customers.

The bad news is that this tactic requires real work.  To make matters worse, it’s not easy to outsource this tactic because it requires a deep understanding of your industry, as well as your product or service.

Can you guess what I’m talking about?

The one and only way to accomplish all 4 of the digital marketing goals outlined above is via content marketing. Content marketing is the process of creating and publishing original and unique content in the form of articles, videos, and even audio files.  For example, this article you’re reading right now is a piece of our own content marketing system.

We publish articles like this because many of them will eventually rank high in Google to drive relevant traffic to our site.  We also email articles to prospects and customers as a way to follow up and stay top of mind.  Articles like this help position Main Street ROI as an authority in digital marketing.  And finally, we post articles and other content on social media sites to engage with prospects and customers outside of our own email database.

As I hope you can now see that, without great content, there’s just no way you can expect to achieve the 4 digital marketing goals outlined above.
