For many business owners, the most obvious choice to get started with Google AdWords is to hire an outside company to set up their Google AdWords campaign…
These types of AdWords consultants are known as pay per click management companies, or “PPC companies” for short.
Now, I’m pretty familiar with how PPC companies operate (and what they charge) because I’ve been managing Google AdWords campaigns since 2006. And I continue to manage AdWords campaigns for a small, select group of private clients.
But I’m not going to try and convince you to hire me… Because, the reality is, you shouldn’t hire ANYBODY to manage your ads in the beginning.
Instead, you should really do it yourself…
Reason #1. You Stay In Control
The whole point of investing in paid advertising is so that you gain control over your marketing…
But if you go out and hire a PPC company to manage your advertising — before you’ve educated yourself about how Google AdWords works — then you surrender that control…
You’ll put yourself in a very vulnerable position…. because you won’t be able to evaluate the quality of the PPC company’s work.
How will you possibly know if they’re following best practices, or neglecting your campaign and wasting your advertising investments?
You won’t. Not unless you educate yourself, first.

The other issue with hiring a (good) PPC management company is that it’s probably too expensive for you (depending on what your ad budget is).
You see, the vast majority of small business owners only spend a few hundred dollars to a couple thousand dollars per month with AdWords.
On the other hand, good PPC companies charge a minimum of $1,000 per month to create and manage AdWords campaigns (and many charge many multiples of that, per month).

I would say it makes sense to hire a PPC company once you’re spending $10,000 or more per month on AdWords…. Minimum $5,000 per month.
Otherwise, it just doesn’t make much sense. You’re better off managing your ads in-house (either by yourself, or having an employee do it for you).
And What About Delegating To An Employee?
Eventually, you may want to hand it off to an employee…but I only recommend you do that once you’ve got a campaign running and working for you.
